MOAK PANCAKES FOUNDER
Sten, tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Sten, I’m 35 years old and I have been living in Amsterdam for about 15 years. In 2016 I build my dream, Moak Pancakes in Amsterdam-West, with my business-partner Sammy. An American pancake restaurant, with pancakes in a lot of different and creative ways, a big hip-hop theme and a very relaxed vibe.
What makes your pancakes different?
We don’t do the traditional Dutch pancakes, we both rather wanted to do American pancakes, because this looks way more attractive and this concept was less known in Amsterdam. Maybe a bit of a risky choice, but totally worth the gamble! And let’s face it, everybody loves good food!
How did Moak come to life?
We started in 2016 and it just kind of exploded. We were the first place in Amsterdam that fully focused on American pancakes. It was a big and uncertain step, but our idea, our recipes and the general vibe came through very nicely. So, 2016 was an amazing year for us! Our name was getting popular in Amsterdam and our social media got a lot of attention, which gave us the opportunity to expand to more locations in Amsterdam. A dream come true!
What’s next for Moak?
We were already doing very well as a breakfast, lunch or brunchspot, but after opening three Moak restaurants we decided to open a cocktailbar next: Bar Mokum! So, besides making it in the cocktailbar-scene, we would like to go international next. We would really like to open new locations in the bigger cities of the world, like Kuala Lumpur, London, Paris, New York, Dubai or Berlin. So, hopefully when this whole Covid-thing is done, we can resume our expansion dream!
